The Exorcist already had one reboot in the form of The Exorcist: Believer. Now, we’re getting something new from Mike Flanagan, who’ll direct and write the feature. They’ve added Chiwetel Ejiofor to the cast of the upcoming film. He joins Scarlett Johansson in the cast. It reunites him with Flanagan, who he worked on with The Life Of Chuck in 2025.

The film is said to not be a remake and not a sequel, but set in the same universe as the original film. Jacobi Jupe and Diane Lane are also on the cast list. The rumors are that Ejiofor is playing an ex-con turned priest, with Johansson playing Jupe’s mother in the film.

The original film The Exorcist, came from William Friedkin and was based on the novel by William Peter Blatty. It told the story of a demonic possession of a young girl and the priests that try to save her. It was one of the first horror movies to be nominated for 10+ Oscars. The series gave us plenty of sequels and prequels over the years.

The new film has a theatrical release date of March 12, 2027. It’s being produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, Morgan Creek Entertainment, and Flanagan with his company Red Room Pictures.

David Robinson produces for Morgan Creek Entertainment. Jason Blum and Ryan Turek serve as producer and executive producer, respectively, for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. Alexandra Magistro will also executive produce for Red Room Pictures.
