The Naked Gun had some absolutely gut-busting scenes. One specific scene was involving a Pro Wrestler-Turned-Actor. If you haven’t seen The Naked Gun yet, there might be a tiny spoiler here, so beware!

Director Akiva Schaffer sat down with our friend Brandon Davis of Phase Hero and talked about the cameo for Dave Bautista later in the film.

You know, it’s just Liam had to go to the bathroom, so he hired a double for him!”

Schaffer went on to talk about how the role came about.

“That’s so funny that I now that I forget he’s a wrestler, but I added that.. We shot in Atlanta but it’s an LA movie and I tried to get it to shoot in LA for. No disrespect to Atlanta, but it’s an LA movie. I want it to be on the streets of LA. It was financially, just was not feasible. And hopefully roads new taxing that is past would make future ones okay. It’s really hard to fake L.A. in Atlanta, there’s almost none.

And so we’re inside a lot. So we owed some L.A. photography and we shot for Tuesday in LA, and we just did it like three months ago. So I shot the movie last summer, and then we did our LA shooting three months ago.”

“Yeah, we [used a green screen]. And then at that moment, we had that scene in the fountain, but I knew I wanted another joke in that moment and it was also, we only had a certain amount of money for reshoots, and that was a really cost efficient reshoot in that moment. Now, they’re called reshoots, but there are additional photography where I was trying to get all our LA exteriors that we owed and get a bunch of LA stuff to sell that we were in LA.

“And we were like, ‘Wait a second.’ So, we cut out a picture of Bautista, like his face, like in Photoshop, put it on Liam’s body so it would have Liam’s suit. And there’s a version where it’s my voice doing a bad impression of Bautista, where we puppeted into them, like, almost South Park style, you know, because we knew we had plates.

“We actually had to steal some of the plates from, like, right when I say action but before Liam came in the scene to get like those backgrounds.”

The Naked Gun stars Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Danny Huston, CCH Pounder, Kevin Durand, Liza Koshy, with Cody Rhodes and Busta Rhymes. It comes from director Akiva Schaffer and writers Dan Gregor, Doug Mand, and Schaffer. It’s a “legacy sequel” to the original series, but those legacy elements are played more for laughs than anything really relating to the plot.
