It seems the story of Facebook isn’t over with yet. After the excellent The Social Network, Aaron Sorkin is coming back to write and direct a sequel. Deadline was the first with the news. They’re reporting that the sequel will follow up on the original movie, but won’t be a direct sequel. Todd Black, Peter Rice, Sorkin, and Stuart Besser are producing.
The new movie explores the story behind the Wall Street Journal’s Facebook Files. The explosive set of articles was published in October 2021 which exposed the inner workings of the world’s largest social media network.
The original film came out in 2010 and earned $226 million at the global box office. It helped launch the careers of Jesse Eisenberg and Andrew Garfield. It was nominated for eight Oscars including Best Picture and won three, including Sorkin for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Here’s what Deadline had to say about the genesis of the idea.
“Since its release, Sorkin has noted on several occasions his interest in doing a follow-up, but he couldn’t find the right angle. Following the events of January 6, 2020, when the U.S. Capitol was attacked, Sorkin found new inspiration saying in an interview last year that he believed Facebook played a part.”
The original was directed by David Fincher, but Sorkin is stepping into the director’s chair for the sequel. He’s recently directed Molly’s Game, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Being The Ricardos.
Sorkin is currently looking for his ensemble for the movie, but it’s unknown if Eisenberg will return to play Mark Zuckerberg.
