I haven’t been able to shut up about Tron: Ares ever since it was announced that the movie was actually happening. All of the updates, bread crumbs, and theme park rides along the way have led us to this very moment: the day where tickets for the Jared Leto-led threequel are now on sale. What’s more, there’s a pretty awesome early access option that eager fans can take advantage of…if they can find it.

With the news that User and Program alike can now book passage back onto The Grid, it’s also been confirmed that a special Tron IMAX Double Feature is now on the table! Fans have been whispering about the prospect for a little while, after stumbling on some early theater listings for the October 8th event – which boasts a double bill that includes Tron: Legacy’s IMAX 3D return.

Let’s take a minute and bask in that news, shall we? First we got yesterday’s sweet Nine Inch Nails music video tying into Tron: Ares, and now we’re one step closer to seeing the titular warrior caught in a battle between realms. Unfortunately, there’s a bit of a catch when it comes to this pleasing development.

Tron: Ares’ IMAX 3D Double Feature Has Limited Availability

As one may have expected, it appears that Tron: Legacy’s double feature resurgence is only available in certain locations. Which is kind of sad, considering that both it and Tron are already on deck for a remastered 4K home video re-release later this month. However, if you’re an eagle eyed aficionado that doesn’t mind a bit of travel time, you’re probably already seeking out those select screens to make it happen.

There is one caveat I’ll put into the air, before I or anyone else totally gives up hope on seeing the Tron IMAX Double Feature. Theater chains update their listings on a weekly basis, usually on a Wednesday afternoon. So there is a chance that as we get closer to Tron: Ares’ opening weekend, more locations may reveal this option in their list of showtimes. In any case, there are still plenty of other early access screenings present for Tron: Ares, and in various formats!

Personally, I’m eyeing the 4DX variant set for this very night – should the IMAX double play not work out. You can thank my allegiance to that format as part of the reason. However, considering how this awesome poster for the premium large format release looks, it’s not an easy choice by any stretch:

For anyone who wants to see the works of Flynn writ large on the big screen, Disney’s would-be blockbuster is set to officially open on October 10th – in the thick of this year’s New York Comic Con!
