If you are a fan of a good dark thriller, you are going to want to check out the Batman: Dark Patterns series from DC. This twelve-issue series contains three story arcs, with the first one called We Are The Wounded. This story, created by Dan Watters and Hayden, takes us to the early years of Batman as he deals with a series of sickeningly gruesome murders. Can the Dark Knight get to the bottom of these murders? We don’t know yet, but you can check out my thoughts on this three-issue arc below.
Batman: Dark Patterns – We Are The Wounded Story Arc
Batman: Dark Patterns will be told as a series of four self-contained, street level, evergreen Batman mysteries exploring the early days of Batman’s place within Gotham City and his healing presence within its streets.
The first case and story arc, “We Are Wounded,” involves a series of sickeningly gruesome murders sending shock waves through Gotham City. Are these the random works of a serial killer, or is there something more sinister at play? Across these first three issues of Batman: Dark Patterns, Batman attempts to get to the bottom of the mystery before any more victims are claimed.

Batman: Dark Patterns – We Are The Wounded Story Arc – The Review
Thank you for checking out another one of my Nerdy Vet reviews. For those not familiar with my reviews, I like to follow what I call the three Ss: Simple, Short, and Spoiler-Free. Before we get into this review, I would like to thank DC for sending an advance copy of Batman: Dark Patterns series to review. For this review, I will be taking a look at the first arc of this series, We Are The Wounded.
This story takes place in Batman’s early years of trying to protect Gotham. This dark story, We Are Wounded, reveals multiple murders that have been committed in a very dark and gruesome way. Because of how each murder was committed, Batman very quickly figured out they were all connected. The more he dug, the closer he got, and we were soon introduced to a new villain who may be one of the worst and deadliest that Batman has ever encountered.
Wow! I don’t even know where to start. This first arc of Batman: Dark Patterns is one of the best stories that I have read in a long time. Dan Watters straight up knocked this arc out of Gotham Field. These first three issues had it all. They were action-packed, gruesome, dark, and kept you on the edge of your seat wanting more!

From the murder scenes to even the villain, I don’t think I have ever seen a comic dive into pain and misery like the We Are The Wounded arc did. The art by Hayden Sherman also helps make these issues stand out. The art is dark and sets the mood throughout the whole comic arc. It gives you a feeling from the early Batman comics in the 90s. The entire creative team “NAILED” this story.
If you are a Batman fan and like a dark and gruesome story, Batman: Dark Patterns – We Are The Wounded arc is a must-read! You get to see the Dark Knight in his early years as he is more like a detective trying to solve crimes. The villain is dark and mysterious and is ready to torture his victims to death. This is one of the darkest Batman arcs to date. Go to your local comic shops now a pick up the first three issues, you won’t regret it. I can not wait to share my thoughts on the next arc, The Voice of the Tower.
