When Freaky Friday was released in 2003, it marked Disney’s third attempt at bringing Mary Rodgers’s 1972 book to life. More than two decades later, it’s safe to say that the version starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis has become the definitive adaptation. When it was announced that Lohan and Curtis would be returning for a sequel, Disney fans were thrilled. Lohan got her start with Disney in The Parent Trap in 1998, and her last film with the company was Herbie Fully Loaded in 2005. If you’ve been looking forward to Lohan’s Disney return, we’re thrilled to report Freakier Friday is the perfect sequel.
What Is Freakier Friday About?

Directed by Nisha Ganatra and written by Jordan Weiss, Freakier Friday picks up more than 20 years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) switched bodies. Now, the mother-daughter duo is faced with another crazy swap. This time, Anna is the mother to her own teenager, Harper (Julie Butters). Their life gets complicated when Anna falls in love with Eric Reyes (Manny Jacinto).
The couple plans to get married, but their daughters hate each other. Lily Reyes (Sophia Hammons) is a fashionista who wants to move back to London, while Harper is a surfer who wants to stay in Los Angeles. After an encounter with a psychic, the four leads wake up in new bodies. Anna and Harper make the classic mother-daughter swap while Tess and Lily get their own shocking switch. In their new adult bodies, Lily and Harper hatch a scheme to break up their parents. Meanwhile, Tess and Anna enjoy the freedom of younger bodies.
You’ll Laugh, You’ll Cry

Freakier Friday works on every level. First, it doesn’t fall into the nostalgia trap by making the entire film a reference to the original. Naturally, there are callbacks. If you were swooning over Jake (Chad Michael Murray) in the 2000s, you won’t be disappointed. But instead of rehashing the same jokes and obstacles, Freakier Friday takes on a whole new view. The movie is still about understanding someone else’s perspective. However, it’s not as simple as mothers and daughters learning to relate to each other. Lily and Harper have to find common ground, all while trying to understand their parents’ relationship.
The movie is also laugh-out-loud funny. Lohan and Crutis prove they still have the comedic chops to carry out such a silly concept. Curits isn’t afraid to poke fun at her age. She was clearly having a blast playing a looks-obsessed teen trapped in a grandma’s body. Lohan brings the dazzling magnetism that made America fall in love with her when she was young. At the same time, Butters and Hammons prove they have what it takes to keep up with the original stars. They’re incredibly charming and carry some of the film’s most emotional moments. Yes, you’ll laugh, but you’re also likely to shed a tear or two.
Make Good Choices

When Freakier Friday was announced, we expected some delightful nostalgia akin to Hocus Pocus 2. It was hard to imagine a sequel could come close to the original, but we were just happy Lohan was coming back to us. Now that we’ve seen the movie, it’s safe to say Freakier Friday is just as good, if not better, than the 2003 film. It’s hard to imagine how this follow-up could have done more to capture our hearts. Ganatra and Weiss clearly understood what made the first film so likable while knowing how to make the concept work in 2025. It’s everything a legacy sequel should be.
Do yourself a favor, and go see Freakier Friday on the big screen. It’s such a relief that Disney didn’t just dump the film on Disney+. It deserves to be seen with a crowd. Whether you plan a mother-daughter date, take the whole family, or see it with your fellow Millennial bestie, you’re guaranteed to have fun watching Freakier Friday.
