Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy the Mail Girl returned to The Last Drive-In this weekend with a double feature that paired a modern slasher hit with a cult Halloween dud. The night kicked off with Eli Craig’s Clown in a Cornfield (2024), followed by the infamous low-budget mess Jack-O (1995). Fans were also treated to a surprise GWAR concert that chaotically celebrated the show.

Clown in a Cornfield: A Modern Slasher Done Right

Clown in a Cornfield

Clown in a Cornfield follows a small town divided between old traditions and younger residents who just want out. When a masked killer in a clown costume starts picking off teens, chaos follows. The movie is sharp, stylish, and better acted than most modern slashers.

Joe Bob and Darcy were joined by Clown in a Cornfield director Eli Craig and author Adam Cesare, who wrote the original novel. Both guests brought a ton of insight and enthusiasm, walking viewers through the film’s development, tone, and adaptation challenges. Their chemistry with Joe Bob and Darcy made for a fun, informative segment that elevated the discussion beyond the typical Drive-In fare. The downside, though, was that this movie is still pretty fresh. Many in the audience, myself included, had already seen it. That took away some of the thrill that comes with Joe Bob’s usual deep cuts. It was still a good chat, just not the same discovery you hope for from this show.

Jack-O: So Bad It’s… Still Bad

Next up was Jack-O, and honestly, this one was rough. It’s a mid-’90s shot-on-video pumpkin-headed slasher that has a cult following for all the wrong reasons. Bad acting, worse editing, and a plot that barely makes sense. Even Joe Bob’s trivia couldn’t save it, though his commentary about low-budget horror marketing in the 90s was more interesting than the movie itself. Darcy leaned into the absurdity, but it’s the kind of pick that’s only fun because of the community watching it together. If you were alone, it’d be unbearable.

The GWAR Concert: The Real Highlight

Throughout the episodes, there were GWAR concert segments that blew the roof off the show. It was loud, bloody, and full of the over-the-top energy that fits The Last Drive-In perfectly. This was honestly keeping me from turning off Jack-O, this was a well-earned jolt throughout the episodes. The GWAR concert reminded everyone why this community still tunes in week after week: chaos, camaraderie, and the kind of unfiltered weirdness only Joe Bob can deliver.

Conclusion

This double feature was uneven but entertaining in its own way. Clown in a Cornfield was too new to feel special, yet the guest interviews were some of the best of the season. Jack-O was a total trainwreck, though it gave Joe Bob and Darcy plenty of material to riff on. The GWAR concert delivered with pure Drive-In chaos. Not the strongest lineup overall, but still a good time thanks to the guests and the show’s trademark personality.

The Last Drive-In with Joe Bob Briggs streams live on Shudder every month on the first Friday at 6 PM PST / 9 PM EST. Missed the live show? Episodes are archived online the following Sunday.
