Mike Carey returns to the comic book scene on a bloody rampage in CUL-DE-SAC, a chilling new series that drips with blood and sharp storytelling. Teaming up with visionary artist Jonathan Wayshak, Carey takes a seemingly quiet suburban street and reveals a blood-soaked secret: the parents are vampires, and their kids are next in line. What begins as an innocent summer camp-out spirals into a brutal fight for survival as the children are thrust into a nightmarish world of evil, ancient legacies, and relentless vampire hunters. CUL-DE-SAC is a bold, brutal, and beautifully illustrated plunge into suburban horror that proves the scariest monsters might be the ones living next door. Issue #1 is available now at most local comic shops.

CUL-DE-SAC #1

What lurking evil lies hidden at the end of the cul-de-sac?

Nestled in a tucked-away corner of sleepy suburbia, the Kingsley, Herriman and Ortega families seemed like any other close-knit neighbors. So nothing seems amiss when Mrs. Kingsley piles all the neighborhood kids into the family RV for their annual summer camp-out. But in the dark of the woods, she unleashes a grisly, bloodcurdling display, revealing their families’ shocking secret—their parents are vampires and they’re eager to pass on their legacy.

Now the children must choose—to join them and revel in their awesome dark powers or live out their lives as mortals. But when they return home, they confront a gruesome scene—their parents dead on the floor, brutally murdered by an elite squad of vampire hunters. And the hunters? They’re looking to finish the job. Now the kids are on the run, chased by vampire hunters, the police, and even a shadowy cabal of their fellow vampires as they search for answers to unlock the secret of what they really are before their fates are sealed forever.

CUL-DE-SAC #1 – The Review

First, I would like to thank Bad Idea for selecting me to receive an early PDF review copy of CUL-DE-SAC #1 to review. For those who are new to my reviews,  I like to keep them short, simple, and as spoiler-free as I can (what I call the 3Ss).

CUL-DE-SAC is a brutal, blood-soaked plunge into suburban horror that hits hard and lingers long after you turn the page. New York Times bestselling writer Mike Carey (Lucifer, X-Men) returns to comics with a chilling tale that redefines the vampire mythos through the lens of childhood trauma, twisted legacies, and impossible choices. But what truly sets this story apart is how seamlessly the art brings it all together.

Jonathan Wayshak’s illustrations aren’t just a visual companion; they’re the lifeblood of the book. His gritty, jagged style is as dark and visceral as the story itself, matching every moment of terror, tension, and heartbreak beat for beat. The panels drip with emotions and menace, making even the quietest scenes feel unsettling. It’s a perfect marriage of narrative and visual chaos.

 CUL-DE-SAC

That said, one of the few issues I had with CUL-DE-SAC was some of the pacing during the back-and-forth between the vampire hunters and the main storyline. The jumps in perspective can feel a bit overwhelming at times, making it hard to stay fully grounded in the moment. While these shifts are meant to add layers to the narrative, they sometimes interrupt the flow of the story.

Still, at its core, CUL-DE-SAC is a savage, smart, and visually unforgettable horror tale about identity, survival, and the monstrous truths hiding behind white picket fences. Despite a few hiccups, it’s a must-read for fans of the genre looking for something bold and blood-drenched.
