Typically, we don’t condone holiday erasure. As soon as summer starts to wind down, many people will start digging out their Christmas decorations and planning their annual explosion of winter holiday cheer even before Halloween has a chance to roll in like an eerie fall fog. But when it comes to Nancy Meyers’ beloved romantic comedy The Holiday, we’re willing to make a slight exception.
According to Deadline, Apple TV+ is planning an adaptation of the 2006 film starring Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black. In the acclaimed movie that has become a Christmas staple for many fans, a Los Angeles movie trailer editor and a London newspaper staffer swap houses for the holidays after they both hit rough patches in their love lives. But new romances brew during their transatlantic tradeoff when the two women are swept off their feet by a couple of unexpected suitors.
However, despite keeping the same basic elements intact, this new project will be switching a few things up.
Is The Grass Always Greener On The Other Side?
The report notes that Apple will be taking some liberties with this project. First, it will be a limited series rather than a movie. Then, it will reportedly focus on different characters than Diaz’s Amanda and Winslet’s Iris. But the biggest change for this reboot of The Holiday is that Nancy Meyers — who wrote, directed, and produced the original film — is not currently involved.
Instead, Krissie Ducker, whose previous work includes Prime Video’s The Assassin and Sweetie on Starz, is attached to write and executive produce the show. Left Bank Pictures is also on board to produce. And the production has tapped Rob Delaney to join the writing team as well. Delaney may be best known to fans for playing Peter in Deadpool 2 and Deadpool and Wolverine, but he also created and starred in the acclaimed streaming series Catastrophe.
And as far as casting goes, the process is ongoing. It is said that the search for well-known actresses to lead the series is currently underway in both America and the UK. Once deals have been signed, The Holiday is expected to get the green light right away.
In this age of car camping, Airbnb Experiences, and #VanLife, it will be interesting to see how The Holiday and its premise resonate with modern audiences. Plus, after growing up with the original characters and rooting for them over the past 20 years, will fans be ready to move on from Amanda, Iris, Graham, and Miles? And when will Jack Black get to play a romantic lead again?!
