Fox is working on a new Bewitched project. Deadline reports that Judalina Neira and Doug Robinson are aboard for this new version of Bewitched. Sony Television inked the duo to a new deal under their banner. In the old Bewitched TV series, Samantha (Elizabeth Montgomery) was married to Darrin (Dick York). She’s secretly a witch and has to solve a load of hijinks while keeping her secrets under wraps. It was a real hoot in its time.
New Bewitched producer Neira worked on The Boys for Prime Video. Robinson is a Sony TV “lifer” as the longest-tenured producer at the studio. This fresh take on the concept revolves around the cultural clashes of a witch and human trying to start a relationship. Seems like a potent mix that could delight a bunch of viewers out there going through something similar!
Bewitched has enduring appeal
A lot of folks love old TV shows. Looking at the streaming charts will show you evidence of that fact. The Television Academy caught up with Darren Starr. The creator of Emily in Paris listed some of his favorite TV shows. Bewitched absolutely fits the bill for its stylish, and frankly funny take on New York City life.
“Oh my god, I loved it. It was on when I was really little, and I watched every episode even though it was in black and white — I never wanted to see anything in black and white! I think I loved the wish fulfillment,” Star explained. “There was something about Elizabeth Montgomery that I just loved.”
“The show also touched into a tiny bit of New York sophistication because [Samantha’s husband] Darren was in advertising. I once went back and rewatched the pilot, and the show was actually funny and really well-constructed,” he continued. “And I think that stuff gets in your head; there’s something so appealing about old-school writing and crafting comedy for, like, 32 episodes a season.”
