Get ready to laugh through history. HBO has officially ordered a new untitled half-hour sketch comedy limited series starring and executive produced by Larry David. In partnership with the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground.

The six-episode series is co-created and written by Larry David and Jeff Schaffer, who will also direct. It will mix familiar faces from Curb Your Enthusiasm with notable guest stars. The series will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary with a comedic take on the nation’s unique and often overlooked history.

A Unique Spin on American History

Inspired by the Semiquincentennial, the show aims to honor America’s past but with Larry David’s signature irreverent humor. Executive producer Schaffer explained that the characters David is playing did not change history. In fact, they were largely ignored by history. That is a good thing. Expect a hilarious look at the lesser-known figures who somehow slipped through the cracks of history books.

Larry David

Former President Barack Obama, also an executive producer through Higher Ground, joked about working with David. He said, “I’ve sat across the table from some of the world’s most difficult leaders and wrestled with some of our most intractable problems. Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David.”

David, known for his dry wit and unique comedic voice, shared a tongue-in-cheek statement about returning to television after Curb Your Enthusiasm. He said, “Once ‘Curb’ ended, I celebrated with a three-day foam party. After a violent allergic reaction to the suds, I yearned to return to my simple life as a beekeeper. Alas, one day my bees mysteriously vanished. And so, it is with a heavy heart that I return to television, hoping to ease the loss of my beloved hive.”

HBO and Higher Ground Join Forces

HBO’s Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President and Head of Comedy Programming, expressed excitement for the collaboration. She said, “It’s hard to remember a time before ‘Curb,’ or without Larry David’s perspective on modern life. We’re thrilled that Larry is coming back to HBO, this time with Higher Ground, to give us a glimpse at our shared history as we celebrate our Semiquincentennial.”

Larry David and Jeff Schaffer executive produce the series alongside Barack Obama, Michelle Obama, Vinnie Malhotra, and Ethan Lewis from Higher Ground. The company produces diverse projects like the apocalyptic thriller Leave the World Behind and the acclaimed basketball series Court of Gold.

This new series promises to blend comedy, history, and star power for a fresh way to celebrate America’s 250th birthday and bring Larry David’s unique humor back to HBO screens.
