We haven’t had news about Prime Video’s Tomb Raider series in a bit, but now we can confirm that Sophie Turner will play Lara Croft. The series is finally going into production with Phoebe Waller-Bridge as the creator, writer, and executive producer. She’s being joined by Chad Hodge as executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Waller-Bridge and Jonathan Van Tulleken as director.
The series has a production start date of January 19th, 2026. It’s been a tumultuous ride for the series, which was announced three years ago with Waller-Bridge tapped to write and showrun the series. It was officially greenlit in May 2024 and Turner was picked to star a few months later.
Then it was radio silence for the series. There was talk that it could be scrapped or changed up, but now we know that’s not true. There were changes to the writers room, and a second room added, that included Hodge. Here’s what Waller-Bridge had to say about the series.
“I’m so excited to announce the formidable Sophie Turner as our Lara alongside this phenomenal creative team,” Waller-Bridge said. “It’s not very often you get to make a show of this scale with a character you grew up loving. Everyone on board is wildly passionate about Lara and are all as outrageous, brave, and hilarious as she is. Get your artifacts out… Croft is coming…”
Here’s what Sophie Turner had to say about the role:
“I am thrilled beyond measure, to be playing Lara Croft. She’s such an iconic character, who means so much to so many – and I am giving everything I’ve got. They’re massive shoes to fill, following in the steps of Angelina and Alicia with their powerhouse performances, but with Phoebe at the helm, we (and Lara) are all in very safe hands. I can’t wait for you all to see what we have cooking.”
