Twisted Metal Season 2 is now upon us,  and fans are finally getting to see what we’ve all been waiting for! Yes, that’s right, it’s tournament time, and Showrunner Michae Jonathan Smith had lots to say about it at this year’s Comic-Con International (SDCC 2025). Between a time jump, twists, turns, and revelations, Season 2 heats up the action, comedy, and mayhem more than ever before!

As much as Season 1 was about John (Anthony Mackie) trying to find his family, Twisted Metal Season 2 is “all about well, what the hell is family” for John? That question of course includes John’s relationship with Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz). Smith tells us that the show’s sophomore season will see our two main characters reunite and “square out” all that’s transpired since the end of Season 1. As many fireworks as there will be between John and Quiet, though, they won’t compare to explosiveness of the tournament.

“What’s so exciting about it is that we’ve created this foundation of this post-apocalyptic world and this is the first tournament to ever exist in it,” Smith explained. “Why would people enter it? What are their wishes?” We’ll certainly found out for many characters in Twisted Metal Season 2. So how did Smith & Co. bring the tournament to life? Surprisingly, practically. “We had sixteen-plus cars blasting down roads…,” he began. “One of our special effects guys was telling me that he set off more explosions in three months than he did in ten years of his thirty-year career!”

Specials, missiles, and other over-the-top translations from the Twisted Metal video games will of course be visual effects. What won’t be effects will be a ton of characters from the games. That will include one “deep cut – they included that guy??” easter egg character. Axel, especially, was one of Smith’s most favorite additions. Michael James Shaw brings the character to life with a practical rig, something Smith hints will be one of the highlights of the new season.

Anxious to see John, Quiet, Axle, Sweet Tooth, and the rest of the Twisted Metal gang?  New episodes are now streaming on Peacock.
