Yes, it’s been a storied 41 years since This Is Spinal Tap graced our screens and gave us some of the best tracks ever laid like “Big Bottom” and “Stonehenge”. To celebrate that occasion, they’ve recently restored the film in 4K UHD glory with a brand new limited run in theaters. The fantastic mockumentary remains one of the funniest and most self-referential looks into the rock and roll and heavy metal excess of the 1980s. It was first released in 1984 and took the world by storm, catapulting Spinal Tap to the top of the charts and everyone’s hearts.
The new 4K restoration of the film doesn’t add anything or take anything away from the original film, but it does give it a new coat of paint and detail. If you’re heading to the theater to see it, there’s also a special message from filmmaker Marty DiBergi and an exclusive sneak peek at Spinal Tap II: The End Continues. The sequel to This Is Spinal Tap should release later this year in September, but this is the first look anywhere at the film.
This Is Spinal Tap stars Christopher Guest, Michael McKean, and Harry Shearer. It chronicles England’s loudest and most punctual band on their disaster-filled US Tour.
The Good Of This Is Spinal Tap 41st Anniversary 4K Restoration
For the technical nerds out there about picture quality and the restoration process, the film retains all the look and feel of the original. There’s film grain still present, which is what gives the movie its depth and detail. The colors are all also intact, and for a movie that has bright, bombastic outfits and stage setups, that’s incredibly important.
Quite simply, this is the best possible way to watch This Is Spinal Tap. The new restoration takes an already perfect comedy and makes it look that much better with sharp details, crisp colors, and a rocking sound.

The movie speaks for itself, This Is Spinal Tap is just a classic film. It’s one of the funniest and most influential comedies of all time. Since this movie, movies and musical acts have all taken inspiration from it. Scenes like “it goes to 11” and “hello Cleveland!” still hit just as hard and hilarious. The lasting legacy of This Is Spinal Tap is in the influence its had on rock acts and the comedy genre overall. It doesn’t get better than this.
