It’s amazing that after all this time, we’re finally getting a new Lord of the Rings movie. In fact, it has been 11 years as of this writing since we got The Battle of the Five Armies in 2014. 11 years since we last saw the legendary Ian McKellen play Gandalf the Grey. Alas, it won’t be Peter Jackson directing this new movie though. This time, Andy Serkis is the one stepping up to direct, and after voicing (and doing the motion capture for) Gollum to boot. Truly, it will be a step up for him in the world. Literally, in Gollum’s case. Now all we need to do is see if he lives up to the hype.

A hype that continually inflates because we don’t actually know much about this still-untitled movie, or even who is going to be in it. Thankfully, a certain wise wizard is here to give us a bit of info about that. At the For The Love Of Fantasy panel over the weekend, Ian McKellen dropped some tantalizing details about who will be in the new The Lord of the Rings movie. All during a fan event in London over the weekend of August 16-17, 2025 no less. Live on stage at that event, McKellen just casually dropped:

“I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting: There’s a character in the movie called Frodo, and there’s a character in the movie called Gandalf. Apart from that, my lips are sealed.”

Gandalf and Frodo Making a Comeback in Andy Serkis’ The Lord of the Rings Movie

Honestly, this is potentially huge news straight from the mouth of Ian McKellen himself. In fact, it could be a hint that McKellen himself will be in this future The Lord of the Rings movie. After all, he did play Gandalf. Mayhaps he might return to that role for Andy Serkis? Perhaps Elijah Wood might return to reprise his old role as Frodo? Alas, without further confirmation, we don’t know for certain. All we can do is hope that perhaps, McKellen might drop more hints in the future. Or barring that, wait for official info drops later.

What do you all think? Are you excited for the appearance of Gandalf and Frodo in this future The Lord of the Rings movie? Tell us your thoughts in the comments section below.
