It’s been a while since we’ve been excited about some Star Wars news. We do have The Mandalorian and Grogu coming out in theaters next year, but we also have Star Wars: Starfighter from Shawn Levy. It stars Ryan Gosling, Mia Goth, and Matt Smith, but now he’s being joined by Amy Adams, Aaron Pierre, Flynn Gray, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, and Daniel Ings. We have the first image from the film as well. The official Star Wars account shared it on socials.

Star Wars: Starfighter will be an entirely original story in the Star Wars universe, set in a time period that hasn’t been explored before in the saga. Here’s what Levy had to say in the announcement.

“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on ‘Star Wars: Starfighter,’” Levy said in the announcement. “From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”

The film is in production now. It releases in theaters on May 28th, 2027.We learned about Star Wars: Starfighter at Star Wars: Celebration in April 2025 in Tokyo. The film is set five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker. That film concluded the Skywalker Saga and is the last Star Wars film to release in theaters. The next film to hit theaters for Star Wars will be The Mandalorian And Grogu. That film comes out May 22nd, 2026. Jon Favreau is on board to direct the film, which is a spinoff from The Mandalorian.
