Tragically beautiful and heavy, Plainclothes is a film that isn’t easily forgotten once the credits roll. In 1990s New York City, undercover cops are tasked with luring gay men into compromising positions in order to arrest them. Lucas (Tom Blyth) is one of those cops. Hiding from his own past and his own desires, he manages to trap targets successfully, until he meets Andrew (Russell Tovey). Though Lucas doesn’t intend to fall in love, he does, and he must confront how he’s living his own life.
We sat down with writer and director Carmen Emmi to talk about the inspirations behind this film, making peace with his past, and what he wants audiences to take away from watching it.
