Joe Bob Briggs and Darcy the Mail Girl returned to The Last Drive-In with a double feature that mixed mid-’90s Euro-thrills and early 80s backwoods horror. This month’s screenings were Anthony Waller’s cat-and-mouse shocker Mute Witness (1995) and Andrew Davis’ little-seen slasher The Final Terror (1983).

As usual, Joe Bob provided the production history, box office trivia, and the larger cultural context while Darcy balanced it with fan callouts and jokes. Even when the films hit uneven notes, the duo’s energy made the night feel like an event. Their rapport with guest C. Robert Cargill during the second feature added extra spark.

Mute Witness: Cat and Mouse in Moscow

Mute Witness

First up was Mute Witness, a slick and surprisingly funny thriller about a mute special-effects artist who accidentally stumbles into a snuff film operation in Moscow. Waller keeps the tension tight with claustrophobic locations and a playful sense of danger. Joe Bob dug into the film’s unusual production history and the cameo by Alec Guinness, while Darcy had fun with the film’s frantic energy and dark humor. It was a solid start to the evening and one of the more purely entertaining picks of the season so far.

The Final Terror: Backwoods Horror With a Cult Cast

The Final Terror

Then came The Final Terror, a backwoods survival slasher that predates the mid-80s horror boom but features a surprisingly stacked cast including Daryl Hannah and Joe Pantoliano. Despite the pedigree, the film drags and lacks the suspense of its genre peers. Even Joe Bob admitted it was more interesting historically than it was scary. Darcy’s banter helped keep the mood up and the conversation with guest C. Robert Cargill about the film’s legacy and production challenges was the real highlight of this segment.

Conclusion

This double feature landed unevenly. Mute Witness was a fun, fast-paced thriller with clever twists, while The Final Terror underwhelmed despite its cast and premise. Joe Bob and Darcy’s commentary plus the Cargill interview saved the night from feeling like a slog, turning even the weaker film into a worthwhile watch.
