Heat 2 is coming to theaters with a renewed effort from United Artists. THR reports that Warner Bros. had finally moved the Michael Mann movie over to a new home. Jerry Bruckheimer and Scott Stuber are inked to produce Heat 2. Leonardo DiCaprio is the biggest name targeting a starring role at this point. Amazon MGM Studios just couldn’t pass up the chance to hop on the follow-up to such a beloved movie.
Mann has been eyeing a sequel to the 1995 release for some time. For a lot of film fans, Heat 2 represents a peak of action movies from that entire decade. So, expect some of the same flair whenever this project gets rolling. There has been some speculation that a larger-than-expected budget prompted Warner Bros. Discovery to explore passing on the title. Whatever that price tag was, it clearly didn’t scare other studios away from Heat 2.
Heat 2 is coming
The Heat 2 novel came out in 2022, and the entire movie landscape had the same question: would there be a movie adaptation? Mann is right there with everyone else. He told Empire Magazine that he fully intended on a theatrical effort. (But, no Robert De Niro or Val Kilmer this time.) It seems like that dream is closer than ever.
“It’s totally planned to be a movie. Is it a modest movie? No,” Mann clarified. “Is it a very expensive series? No,” he says. “It’s going to be one large movie.”
“It’s sustained in culture,” he added back then. “It’s known. I could delude myself into thinking that the whole world is familiar with it, but when you check out its prominence in home video for over 20 years, this thing really has legs. People are still watching it, people are still talking about it. It’s a brand. It’s kind of a Heat universe, in a way. And that certainly justifies a very large ambitious movie.”
