After the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie back in 2023, it’s really no wonder that Illumination would consider making a sequel. And really, there’s just so much material to choose from. Nintendo has made numerous Super Mario games over the years, often with radically different plotlines for each game. This time though, it looks like we’re going to get a Mario adventure of galactic proportions.
Illumination and Nintendo are proud to announce that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will soon make its debut in theaters. How soon, you might ask? Well, this sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie will hit theaters sometime in April 2026. The exact date is still unknown at this time, so keep an eye out for that as we get closer to that timeframe.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will feature Chris Pratt starring once more as Mario, along with Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Benny Safdie, Kevin Michael Richardson, and Brie Larson. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will return as the directors, with Matthew Fogel returning to write the screenplay, and Chris Meledandri and Shigeru Miyamoto also returning as the producers.
As for what exactly this sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie is all about? Well, Illumination and Nintendo have a new official trailer to help out with that. You can watch it either on YouTube, or just look below:

Honestly, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is a lot less surprising in hindsight when you think about it. After all, The Super Mario Bros. Movie did so well at the box office that a sequel was practically inevitable. The only real surprise here is where Illumination and Nintendo chose to direct it in terms of story.
With Super Mario Galaxy as the focus of this film, it really makes you wonder which Mario game Nintendo will make a movie out of next time. Perhaps a movie based off of Super Mario Sunshine is in order? Or one based off of Super Mario 64? Who can say? We’ll just have to look forward to more announcement from Illumination and Nintendo in the future…after seeing if The Super Mario Galaxy Movie replicates the success of the first film, of course.
