SAG-AFTRA’s Actor Awards (formerly the Screen Actors Guild Awards) honor many of the greatest performances of the year across film and television, and this year in particular has had a wide range of extraordinary work to choose from. It’s a banner year for the award show as the first under the ‘Actor Awards’ moniker, with 15 competitive categories across film and TV.

It’s also a particularly important award this year in particular, with top films like Sinners and One Battle After Another in close contention for the upcoming Oscar race. Since SAG-AFTRA represents the largest membership of any guild, with the Actors Branch the biggest voting bloc in the Academy, winning the night’s top trophy in film–Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture (aka Best Ensemble) is a significant sign that a film might take home the Oscar gold.

That top award went to Ryan Coogler’s Sinners this year (as did Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role, which went to Michael B. Jordan for playing Elijah “Smoke” Moore and Elias “Stack” Moore).  Paul Thomas Anderson’s exemplary One Battle After Another did walk away with one distinguished award: Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Sean Penn. It was a risky win, given that Benicio del Toro was also nominated in that category for his beloved turn as Sensei Sergio St. Carlos.

The big winner of the night on the film side was Warner Bros., dominating with Sinners, One Battle After Another, and Weapons, which netted Amy Madigan Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role (for her work as Aunt Gladys). Rounding out film, Jessie Buckley won for her role as Agnes Shakespeare in Hamnet, and Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning took home Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

On the TV side, The Pitt and The Studio largely dominated. The Pitt received Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series (alongside Noah Wyle receiving Outstanding Male Actor in a Drama Series), while The Studio netted Outstanding Ensemble for Comedy, alongside Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor – Comedy for Seth Rogen and a moving posthumous award for Oustanding Performance by a Female Actor – Comedy Series for the great Catherine O’Hara. Keri Russell took home Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series for her work in Netflix’ The Diplomat. On the Television Movie or Limited Series front, Owen Cooper won Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor for his work as Jamie Miller in Adolescence, and Michelle Williams won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor for her work in Dying for Sex.
