Garfield feels lke one of those things that will never die. He’s been in our lives through an animated series, movies starring Bill Murry, a movie with Chris Pratt, comic strips, and now a new animated series from Paramount+. Deadline had the scoop on Lamorne Morris joining the animated series as Garfield. The new series will be an original story with 2D animation, and is tentatively titled Garfield.

The show has apparently been in development since 2019 through various Paramount mergers, and after Viacom’s acquisition of the rights from owners Paws. That agreement gave Viacom the management of global merchandising rights to the property. Since then, Garfield has been added to the Paramount Products & Experiences portfolio across categories spanning apparel, toys, publishing, food, pets, and more. The animated series has spent seven years coming together in development and production. It’s the first Garfield animated series since 2009’s The Garfield Show, which ran for five seasons on Cartoon Network and Boomerang with Frank Welker voicing the famous orange cat.

There was also the 2024 The Garfield Movie starring Chris Pratt, which has a sequel in development.

Garfield made his debut in comic strips in 1978 and since then has over 200 million daily comic readers.

Who Is Lamorne Morris?

Lamorne Morris is best known to fans of the series New Girl, where he played Winston Bishop. He’s an Emmy-award-winning actor for his role in season 5 of Fargo. He’s starring in Spider-Man Noir alongside Nicolas Cage and is currently in production on Jumanji 4. His choice for Garfield seems like a great one, he has the voice for the Mondays-hating cat.
