During Disney’s CinemaCon 2026 presentation last night, the entertainment giant provided a grand finale to this year’s version of the cinematic trade show. Among the exclusive clips and teases for films to come was a bit of a bombshell announcement: a new format for Avengers: Doomsday’s December release. Dubbed Infinity Vision, the decision is something that fans are skeptical about; and their case for why is worth paying attention to.

What Is Infinity Vision?
So what exactly is Infinity Vision? Well, according to an official press release issued by Walt Disney Studios, this new label basically comes down to this criteria:
Infinity Vision sets a new benchmark for theatrical presentation, certifying auditoriums that meet rigorous technical standards, including a focus on:
- The largest screens for maximum scale
- Laser projection for superior brightness and clarity
- Premium audio formats for fully immersive sound
In addition to those bullet points, there was also a statement from Andrew Cripps, The Walt Disney Studios’ Head of Theatrical Distribution. Here’s what he had to say to further the case for Infinity Vision:
Disney’s standards for production quality are second to none, with every single detail of a film finely tuned for an immersive experience. Infinity Vision certification extends that commitment to the theaters themselves, representing a shared effort between The Walt Disney Studios and the exhibition community to help audiences quickly find the very best screens in their area to experience our films in exactly the way they’re designed to be seen – on a huge screen with the sharpest, clearest color and sound.
To be totally fair, if you were part of the studio releasing Avengers: Doomsday, you’d want your picture on the biggest and best screens too. Which leads to the issue that some internet commenters feel created Infinity Vision, and its controversy.

Avengers: Doomsday’s Loss Of IMAX Screens Has Fans Skeptical Of Infinity Vision
Unfortunately the news of Infinity Vision’s inception hasn’t been the slam dunk that Walt Disney Studios wishes it would be. A good portion of the negative reactions to this new premium certification seem to point out one event film as the culprit for this decision; as you’ll see in this sampling of reactions from Twitter:
- “lol admirable effort to spin no imax for doomsday…” – @mattbeloni
- “Disney just gave the middle finger to IMAX (and its allegiance to DUNE: PART THREE) with the extremely vaguely defined premium large-format classification “Infinity Vision” for the release of AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY. What does that mean? Beats me.” – @HertzBarry
- “Since “Avengers: Doomsday” won’t be playing in Imax, which is giving all its screens on Dec. 18 to “Dune: Part III,” Disney is trying to market all the PLF screens as “Infinity Vision.” Interesting to see if theaters decide to use this branding for their many different PLFs” – @benfritz
- “We can’t get the IMAX screens, so here’s a fake format to launder money because we think we can do well against Dune: Part Three” – @firewalkwjaime
Regardless of where you stand on the issue, Avengers: Endgame’s September re-release in Infinity Vision will be the true test of how this venture will hold up. Plus, knowing where the best non-IMAX screens in town happen to be is quite handy; in light of the format’s recent wave of popularity.
We’ll see if the Infinity Vision gambit pays off in September, with the return of Endgame, and in Avengers: Doomsday’s December 18th release into theaters.
