The Stöned Age is arguably the perfect movie for the Vestron Video line from Lionsgate. The line celebrates the video store era with a boutique label (Arrow Video, Scream Factory, Etc) level of craftsmanship for a lower price than any of those companies. The Stöned Age is also a forgotten comedic classic of the later video store era. In its debut on Blu-ray, Lionsgate and Vestron have done wonders with this film in its transfer, extras, and just getting the movie out and available for the general public. If you haven’t seen The Stöned Age, here’s a synopsis.

The Stöned Age follows Hubbs and Joe, in pursuit of partying and girls in Torrance, California, one Saturday night. When they hear about an epic rager going on near the beach, Hubbs and Joe head over, setting in motion a comedic adventure of rad proportions. Hubbs gets the girl! The cops show up! An ex-con loses his temper! And…Joe’s mind gets blown in the gnarliest way imaginable. Featuring a killer lineup of iconic ’70s rock bands.

If you haven’t seen the movie, this is already a worthy release just for including it in HD for the first time. One of my favorite sub-genres is that of the “one-night-only” movie. Characters get thrown together in a journey that takes them through a lifetime in one night. Think of films like Superbad or After Hours. That’s what you’re getting with The Stöned Age.

The Extras Are Worthy Of Its Own Section

  • The Stöned Age in Blu-ray
  • Vestron Video Collector’s Series #38
  • Art by Lucas Peverill
  • Lionsgate Limited Extras:
    • Back to The Stöned Age
    • Tales from The Blue Torpedo: The Stöned Age Reunion
    • Extended Scene
  • Legacy Special Feature:
    • Audio Commentary with Director and Cowriter James Melkonian and Cowriter Rich Wilkes

The extras package here includes some brand new content just for this release. ‘Back To The Stöned Age’ was a fascinating look at the film and its legacy since it released. What really was cool was to see the reunion in ‘Tales From The Blue Torpedo’. Its always special to see a reunion like that for a cast that has such tremendous chemistry with one another. The extended scene is icing on the top of an extras package that highlights what makes this movie so special.

As for the picture quality and sound, the upgrade to HD from DVD releases is wonderful, showing off the aesthetic of the film and giving it a much-needed facelift. The film looks the best it ever has.

The Stöned Age is a welcome addition to the Vestron Video series and should be a welcome addition to any physical media collector’s collection.

You can pre-order The Stöned Age directly from Lionsgate here. It releases on the perfect date, 4/20.
